Car insurance in Spain - Tips

Spanish car insurance.
Of course, car insurance is important if you drive your vehicle in Javea, or any where in Spain. With a good car insurance policy you will be able to reclaim your losses in the event of a car theft. However, Spanish insurance companies, as in any country, will expect you to take certain precautions to keep your vehicle secure. You may have problems when making insurance claims in Spain if you have left your vehicle without taking due precautions.
Vehicle security in Spain Just as in any other place in the world, car theft is on the increase. Here on the Costa Blanca, where there are many expatriate residents, enjoying their retirement and the small luxuries they have been working for, car theft is a serious threat to our peace of mind. There are things we can all do to make the thieves job harder. Luxury cars at risk
Vehicles most at risk are, obviously, the most valuable ones. The more expensive makes, such as Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Audi, luxury saloon cars, 4 x 4s, most new vehicles and those that are easy to enter and remove!
Be security conscious
If the thief is intent on taking your vehicle there is nothing you can do to stop them, but there are many things you can do to make it more difficult and, perhaps, too time consuming to be worth while. Indeed you agree to take all due care and attention to security when you sign your insurance policy.
Switch off
The most obvious prevention technique is to not leave the cars in the ignition, even for a moment. Many thefts take place on petrol station forecourts, whilst the owner is paying his petrol bill. If you leave the engine running when you leave your car, you are inviting problems and your insurance company is unlikely to be sympathetic.
Javea villa thieves
Many thieves are now checking the garages of villas they rob, to see if there is a vehicle left with the keys in the ignition or nearby. A team from eastern europe have recently been apprehended in Valencia who robbed several cars from villas from Javea to Marbella, along with other valuables from the villas, of course. It is adviseable to lock your car and remove the keys to a safe place, always.
Leave your car secure
Many vehicles, these days, have some type of security device factory fitted. Car immobilisers, alarms, satellite tracking systems, etc. Make sure they are activated when you are away from your car. They may not prevent the theft of your car, but they will certainly make the thief's job much harder and may just be enought to deter them.
Protect your vehicle documents
In Spain, it is a legal requirement to carry your vehicles documentation at all times. Most car owners leave them in the glove compartment for convenience. Of course, this is also convenient for the car thief. There is an active market for stolen vehicle documentation here in Spain. If the documents come with the car, so much the better.
Parking in Spanish cities
Many friends of mine, living in Javea, have had their cars stolen not from home but when out on a shopping or sightseeing trip to, perhaps, Valencia, Alicante, Gandia or Benidorm. Be as aware of where you are leaving your car here as you would in any large city in the world. Payment car park owners in Spain, now, are held responsible for the security of vehicles in their charge. It is not a bad idea to seek one out for the safe keeping of your car. Remember to take the parking ticket out of the car with you.
